“Christmas is far and away my favorite holiday. I love everything about it, from the event that inspired it, hoping for a white one, to wrapping presents. But mostly I love having family and friends gathered, and sharing traditions.”
Ellen Hopkins – American Novelist

This quote sums up my love for the holidays. You see growing up, we had a tradition of eating Jamaican Rum Cake and Spice Bun during the Christmas season. My mother never failed to make sure we spent quality time together while dining on those delightful treats. This made me wonder about how others experienced the holidays, so started visiting friends. I experienced so many great traditions; one in particular stood out to me and became an instant favorite of mine. “Elf on the Shelf,” now that made me laugh. I truly enjoy watching the kids marvel at finding out what new situation the little elf will get himself into every morning before Christmas.

On the flip side to all the happiness, for many the holiday season can bring in depression and sadness. One cause for this, is coping with loss of a loved one. This is such a painful situation, especially for a child; sometimes the signs are not fully clear. So in this issue our writer Tyasia Nicholson took the time explore this. To be honest, this article is one of my favorites for this issue because of the significance in the topic.

Many of us remember the show, Full House. So when Netflix decided to do a reboot we were thrilled that our childhood faves were coming back as adults with their own children. Our very own, Anny Mejia interviewed one of the shows new stars Michael Campion, DJ Tanner’s teenage son. Be sure to read his interview and get to know this amazingly humble star!

Imagine being only 15 years old and already an international music star as well as a fast rising actress! Hard to fathom right? Well meet Polina Butorina, a talented rising star who does it all and still manages to excel in school. Talk about inspiring, I am truly proud to feature her in this issue.

Lastly, I am excited that this issue is only one part of a three issue series that we’ve decided to release. Each issue will be filled with so many great stories and editorials. And as always, I look forward to hearing your thoughts and feedback on this issue.
